About Us

Our school opened its doors in 2004, with the idea that health care professionals could come from and be educated in the community in which they are employed. We have worked hand in hand with our lead partner and vital member of the neighborhood, the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center. Since our first graduating class in 2008 we have produced nurses, radiologic technicians, professors with PhDs, teachers, social workers, and many more professionals who live and work in our community.

Our school is named for Madame Marie Curie, the Polish scientist who holds the distinction of being the first woman to receive two Nobel Prizes (in Chemistry and Physics). She cared deeply about her family, her culture, and for her fellow humans. Her research led to the process used today to help treat cancer (radiology), and she invented a mobile x-ray machine that was used to help treat patients during WW1. She was the first woman professor at the prestigious French university, the Sorbonne, and she founded the Curie Institutes in Warsaw and Paris. Throughout her life she exemplified commitment to her family and her values, curiosity through her lifelong study of radioactive elements, compassion in her efforts to help the injured and sick, and courage to persevere even when people questioned why a woman would take such a prominent role in such a male-dominated field.
